How can new forms of data and information be harnessed to adapt assumptions and models of mass mobility in the post pandemic era?From their UK wide geographically enhanced mobile network data, BT Active Intelligence have built up a granular picture of the daily mobility patterns of the UK population not only spatially and temporally, but also of demographic groups. Utilising this data output in UK wide H3 hexes, the Carto Moran's I functionality allows the analysis of how the relative levels of clustering of the population as a whole change over the course of a day and week, and then, to what degree gender and age groups relate differ from the aggregate level.These differences will be analysed and mapped over the course of a typical week, and tested for regional differences.

The convergence of cloud computing, spatial data science, and artificial intelligence is revolutionizing how organizations understand and interact with location-based information. I’ll share the journey from a traditional Location Analyst role—primarily using Excel, PowerPoint, and legacy GIS tools—to a Full-Stack Spatial Data Scientist approach that incorporates a cloud-native geospatial stack (QGIS, Snowflake, CARTO). Beyond simply replacing tools, this journey has transformed TJX's way of working with geospatial data, allowing end-to-end ownership of projects, reproducible and scalable workflows, and a single source of truth for data in the cloud. By bridging site selection with customer analytics, we’re now able to deliver deeper, more reliable insights that scale with the needs of the business.In this talk, I’ll dive into the challenges of this transformation, from gaining stakeholder buy-in to reshaping collaboration patterns across departments. I’ll highlight why a full-stack mindset—encompassing everything from data ingestion and analysis to visualisation—brings significant benefits in efficiency, consistency, and speed. By sharing real-world examples and lessons learned, I hope to illustrate how embracing a modern geospatial workflow isn’t just about updating technology, but about creating a more agile, data-driven organisation that’s prepared to tackle the evolving demands of retail analytics.

Every year there are an estimated 1 million road traffic accidents around the world, resulting in detrimental societal and economic impacts globally. In response, municipal authorities like Liverpool City Region are committing to 'Vision Zero' in an aim to reduce the number of fatal or serious road traffic accidents to 0 by 2040. A key step to achieving this goal is to invest and implement new pedestrian infrastructure and crossings which dramatically reduce the risks facing pedestrians as they interact with the urban realm, however the supporting data and intelligence for such decisions is notably evident. In this talk, we introduce a recent collaborative project between the Geographic Data Service, University of Liverpool and Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, where spatial data and a bespoke optimisation model were used to identify optimal locations for new pedestrian crossings in the region. We showcase how a simple, computational model is able to balance a number of important trade-offs related to spatial context, urban amenities, collision rates and population characteristics. We also introduce our model of engagement with policymakers, which is built on the key principle of "simpler is often better" and has significant implications for how we visualise and use spatial data to improve pedestrian safety, and in policy settings more generally.
